The disappearance of the Soviet Union in the late twentieth century ushered the world in a new political era. Communism, which had dominated virtually half the planet, suddenly suffered a severe setback and was confined only to a part of Asia. Western democracy and capitalism returned to Eastern Europe, while China, the communist power that still survives, every day is closer to the capitalist model of economy.
